This wooden photo album is made of East Indian Rosewood and American Black Walnut. The top cover is quartersawn East Indian Rosewood, which gives it a rare striped look. The black wood along the hinged side is Walnut which has been ebonized. Ebonized Walnut involves applying a liquid mixture of vinegar and iron oxide, which reacts with the wood's tannin and turns it black. A slight amount of the Walnut's original chocolate brown color can be seen which is a perfect blend with the Rosewood's light to dark brown stripes. A stunning combination of brown and black. The back cover is made from the ebonized Walnut. Here you can get a better idea of what the ebonizing process looks like. The lighter area down the middle is actually the Walnut's sap wood, which is the outer, lighter colored part of the tree, and does not have high amounts of tannic acid. The overall color is a beautiful match with the front Rosewood cover.
Here is a closer look at the binding detail. One of the thin Walnut strips is removed to allow for the pages that can be added. The other 2 strips are left in place to "sandwich" the pages between the top and bottom cover.
If more pages are added, the strips can be removed to allow for them, or only a center strip can be used with pages on either side. Instruction sheet included.
