Amazing Facts... About Honey Honey is one of the oldest foods in existence. It was even found in the tomb of King Tut! In fact, in ancient Egypt, taxes were paid with it, while in early Greece and Rome honey symbolized fertility, love, and beauty. Honey has a long shelf life. No need to refrigerate it. It can be stored unopened at room temperature in a dry cupboard. Fermented honey, known as Mead, is the most ancient fermented beverage. The term "honey moon" originated with the Norse practice of consuming large quantities of Mead during the first month of a marriage. Honey has long been recognized as a natural remedy and has been used as a medicine for thousands of years. Honey is composed of sugars like glucose and fructose and minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium chlorine, sulphur, iron and phosphate. It contains vitamins B1, B2, C, B6, B5 and B3 all of which change according to the qualities of the nectar and pollen. Copper, iodine, and zinc also exist in small quantities. To make honey, bees drop the collected nectar into the honeycomb and then evaporate it by fanning their wings. Honey has different flavors and colors, depending on the location and kinds of flowers the bees visit. Climatic conditions of the area also influence its flavor and color. In the Bible, this sublime nectar is dubbed "the heavenly food." |
