This chess set is solid wood construction. I make a series of wooden panels and cut them into sections that are used to create perfectly aligned squares. This is a very colorful set, and is also the most popular. Because of it's popularity, this set comes in 3 sizes - 1-1/4" squares, 1-1/2" squares and 1-3/4" squares made of Bloodwood and Birch or Maple with a Walnut border. I use Birch or Maple with these boards because they are very similar in appearance. Several coats of a water-proof hand-rubbed poly are applied to preserve and protect the woods. The overall appearance, fit and finish is superb. I have received numerous compliments from other woodworkers about the quality of these boards. The pieces are the German style Staunton and are made of Boxwood and ebonized Boxwood (black) The king measures 2-3/4" or 3-1/4" tall, depending on the board size. Extra queens included.
